I simply took the JB weld the heat and oil resistant kind and applied it around the holes the previous owner so graciously drilled.

On the two piece rods with the ball between you just pull the outer rod. The ball and inner rod stay put. If you want to replace the two piece rod and ball with a one piece rod then pulling the seal and bushing eases the removal of the ball and inner rod.
